Five Spice Calamari with Wasabi Mayo
Wasabi mayo typically goes with prawns. BUT this time round we decided to pair it with one of our FAVOURITE BEER FOODS – Calamari!
Other than the usual salt and pepper, we added five spice powder to the batter which imparts a more sophisticated flavour to the dish.
Last but not least, the recipe for this HOT, REFRESHING and TANGY wasabi mayo dipping sauce goes well with so many dishes and will make you want more!
*Note* To get the calamari to really crispy – fry them in small batches!

3large calamari aka squid (skinned and cleaned) | |
1stalk spring onion (chopped) | |
Oil for deep-frying |
batter:
¾cup cornstarch | |
¼cup plain flour | |
1tsp five spice powder | |
½tsp salt | |
¼tsp pepper | |
1 egg | |
¼cup water | |
wasabi mayo | |
½cup japanese mayo | |
20g wasabi (adjust to taste) | |
2-3tbsp honey (adjust to taste) | |
1tbsp light soy sauce | |
Juice from ½ a lemon |
Directions
1.
Skin and remove insides from 3 large calamari

Cut calamari into rings

To make batter sift ¾ cup cornstarch,

¼ cup plain flour,

add 1 tsp five spice powder,

1 egg,

and ¼ cup water

Mix well and add in calamari rings

Coat the squid rings with the batter evenly

Heat enough oil in a wok, deep-fry calamari rings until golden brown

Drain and set aside

To make wasabi mayo, mix ½ cup japanese mayo,

Drizzle 2 tbsp of wasabi mayo over the fried calamari rings
