4. Durian Snowskin Mooncake

Mid Autumn Festival is coming in just under 3 months, but you can KIV this Durian Snowskin Mooncake recipe or practise your snowskin-making skills using this year’s bountiful produce of durian. As we’ve all learnt making bak zhangs, practise makes perfect!

As we are making the snowskin version, you don’t even need to get involved with baking – it’s really simple.

The filling, which is a mix of lotus paste & durian flesh, is refreshing and addictive, especially if frozen properly to retain its shape and texture without falling apart. A tip is to use the plastic mould if you’re a beginner as it is really much easier to use. Don’t say we never say hor!

Preparation Time: 1 hour. Serves 8 pieces.

5. Durian Ang Ku Kueh

While we’re on the topic of Chinese desserts, Durian Ang Ku Kueh ($1.80) definitely deserves the spotlight. Traditionally, Ang Ku Kuehs are filled with peanut, corn or sweet bean fillings, but while you argue with your siblings over which traditional Ang Ku Kueh filling is best, this seasonal flavour takes the cake (or in this case, the kueh) for now. Enjoy it while it’s still on the menu, by ordering on the website for self collection at the Bugis outlet.

6. Durian Milkshake

Durian has a terrible reputation of being heaty, but in milkshake form ($8.80), perhaps the iciness would balances out the heatiness quite nicely. The shop Durian BB also serves other interesting Durian desserts, such as Durian Chendol ($7.80), Durian Egg Tarts ($3.80) and Durian Polo Bun ($4.80). Pay a visit to their outlet at Crawford Lane, or order it online to enjoy these amazing durian concoctions.

7. Durian Creme Brulee

If you say it fast enough, “creme brulee” sounds like “can boleh”, which roughly translates to no problem, can do. And that’s exactly what this Durian Creme Brulee ($9) is called on the Quarters’ menu. If you’ve got a sweet tooth and a craving for durian, this could be on top of your to-eat list.

8. Durian Fish Soup

This combination… we’re not too sure about, but Angela Chng (@skatercoder) on her website Skater Coder gave quite a good review on this Organic Durian Fish Soup ($12) located in Tampines.

On her website, she says that the “durian blends quite well with the fish soup, the durian flavour is not overpowering but gives the soup additional flavour. The fresh red chilli and black pepper give an additional kick and flavour as well.”

It’s certainly a combination we wouldn’t have thought of — so full marks for innovation for sure!
