Recipes for Hangovers
We are not proud of it, but we all definitely had days when alcohol has gotten the better of us. Worse, the effects might only come in full swing the following morning— fatigue, headache and nausea are just a few signs of a hangover.
While unpleasant, lucky for us, there are several comfort foods we can turn to feel better again. Read on to discover 6 easy recipes to prep for your next party/drinking night!
1. Century Egg and Meatball Congee
When we feel under the weather, congee is probably the first thing that pops up in our heads. Like a warm blanket on a rainy day, a warm bowl of congee is perfect for soothing our stomach after all that alcohol intake.
Requiring minimal chewing, the fluffy rice grains soaked in a richly flavourful broth goes down easier than any other hangover food. The soupiness of the dish also rehydrates the body since alcohol is diuretic, easing the headache we often experience after drinking. If century eggs or meatballs aren’t your thing, you can opt for the Teochew Fish Porridge as well.
Preparation Time: 1 Hour 30 Mins. Serves 3.
2. ABC Soup
Similar to congee, soups are universally popular hangover cures as they replenish the sodium and water levels in the body, and in a delicious way. The ABC Soup is a household favourite (not only because of its interesting name), with chicken being the star player of the recipe.
While the chicken meat gives a thick and savoury flavour, a variety of vegetables are also added to balance the soup out with a little sweetness. Jam-packed with nutrients, this is definitely one of the healthiest hangover cure one can ask for.
Preparation Time: 45 Mins. Serves 4.
3. Creamy Tomato Egg Rice
Tiny yet powerful, eggs make an excellent hangover cure. As a powerhouse of nutrients such as Vitamin B12 and amino acids such as cysteine and taurine, having eggs after a night of alcohol helps to drain unwanted chemicals from the body and protect the liver from being overworked.
Eggs can be easily incorporated into any dish, but we will recommend a good ol’ bowl of Creamy Tomato Egg Rice for your morning-after meal. Not only is it easy to make when you’ve got that pounding headache, the tanginess of tomatoes also helps to activate one’s appetite during a nausea episode. Do be careful with the cooking cream, however, to prevent the eggs from being too creamy/’jelat’!

4. Ginger Fried Rice
As much as ginger might be an acquired taste, it is very useful in combating hangovers. A common herb/spice used in many recipes, ginger aids in digestion and eases drinking-induced nausea.
To conveniently incorporate the spice while not compromising on taste, we would go for a comforting bowl of Ginger Fried Rice. While our recipe used chicken fillets, feel free to be creative with your ingredients! Adding some sesame oil would also help to reduce the pungent and spicy flavour of the gingers as well.

5. Trio Eggs Spinach Soup
We have already told you the benefits of eggs as a hangover cure, but what if you combine it with some spinach in a Trio Eggs Spinach Soup? Spinach is a source of magnesium, which tends to be depleted by alcohol consumption. Like other leafy greens, spinach is also rich in vitamins and minerals eg. Vitamin C and fiber, which helps the body to reset after a hangover.
Put everything together, and you get a wickedly delectable, yet hearty bowl of soup enjoyed by youths and adults alike. This is also perfect for people who want to skip the carbs but still go for something healthy and filling.

6. Korean Hangover Soup

Endearingly known as ‘Haejang-Guk’, there is a good reason why Korean hangover soups are popular globally. Firstly, the saltiness of the soup helps to restore the level of sodium which are lost. Secondly, the presence of water eases dehydration. Last but not least, the spicy flavour of the Haejang-Guk is said to help one ‘sweat’ out the toxins from alcohol and feel better.
Best served with rice, try this for yourself to understand the wonders a simple bowl of pork ribs soup can bring!
