But what if we told you that we had a faster and cheaper way to get the dishes you love? Here are 5 recipes we’ve picked out that you can make in under 30 minutes. There’s no delivery fees, no missing items – only ready-to-eat, piping-hot goodness with flavours tailored for your tastebuds.

 

1. KL Hokkien Mee with Udon Noodles

Let’s be real. Are you going to get the exact same dish sold by a third-generation hokkien mee master selling noodles in KL? Probably not. But are you going to get a pretty good, absolutely delicious and easy-to-make replica? Definitely.

The star of this homemade KL Hokkien Mee recipe is the organic udon noodles, which — after some coating in a delightful combination of soy sauce, fish sauce, flat fish powder and hua tiao wine — is superbly tasty. At the same time, the udon noodles are lighter and less starchy than yellow noodles, removing the inevitable jelak-ness you feel near the end of an actual bowl you might buy outside.

For a tasty cutlet, we recommend seasoning it well with soy sauce, oyster sauce, cooking wine and five spice powder. To elevate the flavour, try searing the minced pork on high heat before adding the fish sauce, soy sauce, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar. The char will add an extra oomph you’ll be hard-pressed to find in other quick and easy recipes. Best served with a sunny side up, rice and some iced thai milk tea.

Wrapping up our list is a recipe for Dry Laksa. Don’t be fooled by the name! Despite the absence of a gravy, this dish is packed with flavour and fragrance to beat.

 

Think: the sizzle of cooking oil, a generous amount of blended chilli paste, garlic, shallots and freshly peeled prawns. All that, served up with thick vermicelli noodles and juicy tau pok exploding with flavour.

Although it has a slightly longer preparation time of 45 minutes, the portion is large enough to cover more than one meal for a couple or a small family. Making it at home also means you can tweak the spiciness to your preferred level, whether it’s one tiny teaspoon or mountains of spicy belacan.
