7 Saucy Dishes To Keep You Warm On A Cold Night

Comfort food, dishes with sauce

For cold and rainy days, something about dishes with soup or lots of warm sauce just feels right. It’s a comforting combination for everyone at the dinner table — and what’s more, these recipes are all simple to make and super good to eat!

From a hearty beef stew to a quick pao fan recipe, here are 7 saucy dishes that will warm your tummy on chilly days.

1. Beef Hor Fun

Beef Hor Fun is a Zi Char dish of choice for many when the weather gets cold, and perhaps that’s because of how amazing it feels to have the tasty, starchy broth melt in your mouth. For the gravy, our recipe uses a balanced mix of chicken stock, fish sauce, oyster sauce and 3 cloves of minced garlic — though you can always add more if you want! That’s the beauty of cooking it at home.

To balance out the savoury flavour of the gravy, add a few dashes of Shaoxing wine, or add in your favourite vegetables like chives, choy sum, or bean sprouts!

2. One Pot Asian Beef Stew

There’s nothing like a good beef stew to keep your tummies happy and warm. While you can use a pressure cooker or instant pot for this, our recipe is stove-friendly as well. A tip is to get good quality beef for more tender chunks to sink your teeth into. Also, starting with a stir-fry full of your favourite herbs and seasonings really brings out the flavour of the stew. Try it for yourself!

Pair this thick soup with fluffy steamed rice, bread, or even just have it on its own for a satisfying meal.

3. Seafood Pao Fan

To imagine the intense seafood flavour of this dish, you have to close your eyes and imagine your favourite prawn soup… multiplied 10 times over. You’ll have to boil it to believe it — With a delicious stock boiled with pan-fried fish bones, prawn and lobster shells, there’s no way you can stop at one bowl!

Top with fried rice grains and scallions for an added crunchy texture that ties this dish together. As a bonus, this filling meal is pescetarian-friendly too.

4. Sambal Eggplant with Minced Beef

It’s one thing to have sauce on a cold day, but to have both sauce and spice really takes it to the next level. This sambal eggplant with minced beef recipe is a quick and simple one, perfect for days when you’re tired out from work.

To get the most out of this flavourful dish, remember to add chopped spring onions and ginger into the mix. After eating this amazing combination of golden-brown eggplant, spicy chilli, steamed rice and even a fried egg, the weather couldn’t dull your mood even if it tried.

5. KL Hokkien Black Mee

Colder days are great for slurping noodles, including this yummy KL Hokkien Black Mee dish. The dark soy sauce gives the noodles their tantalising colour; one look and you know it’s an incredibly tasty dish!

With both seafood ingredients (like prawns and squid) as well as meaty items (like pork belly), this recipe is certainly a hearty one for when you’re feeling hungry. For the best results, use thick yellow noodles. The sauce will easily coat and make the noodles superb for slurping.

6. Pork Liver with Scallions and Wolfberries

Not only is this dish tasty, but it’s also nutritious as well, so much so that it’s actually known as a dish good for new mummies in their confinement period! The star of the dish is the pork liver, which we toss in plain flour and cooking wine before cooking to get rid of the pungent taste.

From then on, it’s as simple as sautéing and stirring with the rest of the ingredients, including scallions, minced ginger, garlic and other seasonings to taste. Voila, a tasty, simmering pot of nutritious goodness.

7. Taiwanese Three-Cup Chicken

Taiwanese Three-Cup Chicken is known for its braised meat, and of course, its deep and rich chicken broth. With the essence of chicken, we recreate the intense flavour that usually takes hours to boil in just 30 minutes!

Like many of the other dishes on this list, the sauce here works best with a bowl of plain rice. On top of satisfying your hunger, you’ll get to savour the taste of the rich sauce complete with cooking wine, basil, garlic and ginger.
