Sakura season is here! While cherry blossoms don’t bloom naturally in tropical Singapore, we have a local version of the beautiful bloom — the equally charming “Singapore sakura”, or trumpet flowers, which pop up in similar pinks and whites during the dry-spell months of April and August.

If you’re keen on doing some flower viewing, we’ve rounded up 6 top spots to view these flowers for an SG hanami experience, along with some Japanese food and drink ideas to bask in the spirit of the season.

1. Japanese Cemetery Park

Honestly, we weren’t surprised to learn that the Singapore sakura can be found in the Japanese Cemetery Park — we think it’s rather fitting! A hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Hougang, this park is the final resting place for Japanese residents in Singapore in the 19th and 20th century, and a great place to learn about Japanese culture and history.

During the local “sakura season”, it transforms into a serene and beautiful spot to explore. As you wander through the enchanting shaded path and floral archways, you’ll be struck by the contrast between the delicate blooms and the somber gravestones — a poignant reminder to embrace the joys of life.

To round off your trip, pop by the nearby Kaiyo Sushi and Grill for some delicious Japanese cuisine. Savour thick, fresh cuts of sashimi, or slurp some Beef Teriyaki Udon with a cup of chilled sake. It’s the best way to conclude a day of reflection and appreciation for Japanese culture.

2. Gardens by the Bay

Actually, Singapore does have real sakura blooms — and they’re housed in Gardens by the Bay! For two months every year, the Flower Dome in Gardens by the Bay is decorated with a stunning sea of pink and white cherry blossom trees, transporting visitors to an ethereal, breathtaking world. It really feels like you’ve stepped right into Japan. (By the way, you can view these trees from now till 9 April this year, so book your tickets now!)

But if you don’t feel like forking out money, you can enjoy their trumpet flower lookalikes along the Planet (that giant  floating baby sculpture) and the Waterfront Plaza. There are tons of benches scattered near these trees to sit down and admire the falling petals without feeling rushed.

And in case you feel the munchies, bring some spicy Karē Pans (Japanese curry bread), or even popular Japanese snacks like Pocky and Hello Panda to nibble on!

3. Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park

A little slice of paradise in the heart of Singapore, Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is great for families to bask in the glory of nature and trumpet flowers in full bloom. It’s a place where you can lounge on the verdant lawns gently carpeted with the fallen pink petals sipping on a refreshing Osmanthus Gin Sour, while, the kids devour some fragrant Karē Pans and make new friends in an inclusive playground for children with different needs and abilities.

If you’re lucky enough, you might even spot the park’s famous otters, who love to frolic and play in the meandering waterways! It’s the perfect way to get up close and personal with some of Singapore’s most beloved creatures while enjoying a “sakura” day out with your loved ones.

4. Jurong Lake Gardens

If you’re a westie and looking to enjoy “sakura season” without venturing too far, Jurong Lake Gardens is your go-to spot. Its calm, clear lake of floating fallen petals encircled by pink trumpet trees makes an amazing backdrop for all your Instagram-worthy shots. Who needs Japan when you have Jurong, right?

Escape from the hustle and bustle of city life by taking a leisurely stroll around the lake or indulging in a cozy picnic on the lush lawns. Personally, we’d love to sit under the vivid blooms and relish some sweet Hokkaido Milk Bread while sipping some Chrysanthemum Gin Fizz for a relaxing hanami experience!

5. East Coast Park

Fifth on our list of top spots is the beautiful East Coast Park. Not only does the park have a scenic coastline, the fully-bloomed trumpet trees lining the park’s pathways give it an extra romantic mood.

The pretty view makes it the perfect place to bring your loved ones for a delicious weekend barbecue. Pack some BBQ favourites like yakitori, corn and chicken wings in your cooler, and enjoy a scrumptious cookout while soaking up the sun and the trumpet flower blooms.

Rather just chill amongst the fallen flowers? Just grab some yummy onigiri (Japanese rice balls) or Japanese Curry Rice from the many 7-Eleven stores nearby to fill up your picnic baskets. With the lovely flowers swirling in the sea breeze accompanied by tasty Japanese food, you’ll feel like you’re in your very own Japanese paradise!

6. Yishun Park

Last but not least, are you a North-sider feeling left out of the hanami fun? Then you’ll be delighted to know that Yishun Park has plenty of trumpet flower blooms for your viewing pleasure!

This heartland park is also a secret garden of fruit trees. Some of the park is still covered with original plantations like rambutan, durian, jack-fruit, and even rubber trees. As you stroll through the park, keep your eyes peeled for some juicy surprises interspersed with the beautiful trumpet flower trees.

And like a gift that keeps on giving, the fun doesn’t just stop there. Yishun Park also boasts a dog run, where your furry friends can gambol about with their canine counterparts off-leash.

If you’re feeling peckish after an afternoon of exploration, satisfy your hunger with some delicious Japanese-inspired Bak Chor Mee from 51 Noodle House at the nearby Yishun Park Hawker, or retreat to the comfort of your home and whip it up yourself.
