Popiah – 薄饼

Ahhhh Popiah, the local oriental burrito.

A delicacy for all palates, this is one well loved dish by both locals and foreign friends visiting. what’s great about Popiah is that it provide different texture and flavours in a single bite, from the crunch from the peanuts and the fried pork skin (or other fired fritters) to the fresh and crispy vegetables matches really well with the sweet flour sauce and spicy sambal.

Hand-made fresh Popiah skins definitely taste much better, they can be purchased from Hup Kiat, Kway Guan Huat or Fortune Food, as it require a skill to make them thin yet strong enough to hold the ingredient we decided to leave it to the experts, until we figure out the fool proof way to make them.

For the type who love bonding together for gatherings, a Popiah party is a great choice as you can have fun making them and everyone can customize they own. There’s no real hard rule here, add or change the toppings to the radish as you like, and make something that defines YOU.

Ingredients

  1. 1/2 kg popiah skin

  2. 2 large turnip

  3. 1 carrot

  4. 3 chopped garlic

  5. 5 chopped shallots

  6. 1 tbsp oil

  7. 1 tbsp light soy sauce

  8. 1 tbsp oyster sauce

  9. 1 dash white pepper

  10. 1 tbsp sugar

  11. 1 cup water

  12. TOPPING

  13. 1 cup chopped boiled eggs (3 eggs)

  14. 1 cup ground peanuts

  15. 1 chinese lettuce (or normal lettuce)

  16. 1 cup cup blanched bean sprout with ends removed

  17. 1 cup fried pork skin

  18. 1 cup poached prawns

  19. 1/2 cup sweet flour sauce

  20. 1/4 cup sambal chili

  21. 1/2 chopped garlic

  22. POPIAH

  23. 1/2 kg popiah skin

  24. 2 large turnip

  25. 1 carrot

  26. 3 chopped garlic

  29. 1 tbsp light soy sauce

  30. 1 tbsp oyster sauce

  32. 1 tbsp sugar

  33. 1 cup water

  34. TOPPING

  35. 1 cup chopped boiled eggs (3 eggs)

  37. 1 chinese lettuce (or normal lettuce)

  38. 1 cup cup blanched bean sprout with ends removed

Instructions

  1. Remove skin from 2 large turnips, and shred them into strips

  2. Shred 1 large carrot

  3. Add 1 tbsp oil into pot, followed by 3 chopped garlics, 5 chopped shallots, then add the turnips and carrots

  4. Add 1 tbsp of light soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, a dash of white pepper, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 cup water and let it simmer for 20 mins

  5. Get toppings ready

  6. Layout 1-2 popiah skin

  7. Add and spread 1 tbsp of sweet flour sauce, 1/2 tsp garlic, 1/2 tsp sambal chili, 1/2 a lettuce leaf, handful of blanched bean sprouts

  8. Drain 2 spoonfuls of cooked turnip

  9. 1 tbsp chopped boiled eggs

  10. 1 tbsp ground peanuts

  11. 1 tbsp fried pork skin

  12. 4 poached prawns

  13. Fold the sides, and ROLL.

  14. Remove skin from 2 large turnips, and shred them into strips
