Pomelo Salad – 柚子沙拉

If you haven’t bought an Yu Sheng or are unable to reserve one because it is sold out, fear not! The Meatmen has the perfect solution for you! Pomelo Salad – 柚子沙拉 is an awesome alternative, it is super simple to make and definitely budget friendly! Also, with the covid-19 restrictions, Singaporeans aren’t allowed to shout auspicious phrases when doing the prosperity toss. So, this might just be the next best alternative yet! Did you know that eating pomelo during CNY actually symbolises good luck and prosperity?

Feel free to tweak this salad to your own preference and add your favourite vegetables as well as salmon sashimi if you like!

  1. 1 whole pomelo

  2. 1 whole carrot (shredded)

  3. 1 whole cucumber (shredded)

  4. 5 shallots (sliced)

  5. 2 tsp salt

  6. 8 prawns

  7. 1 packet Pok chui biscuits

  8. 2 tbsp peanuts

  9. Garnish with coriander

Salad dressing:

  1. 2 chilli padi

  2. ⅓ cup plum sauce

  3. 1½ tbsp fish sauce

  4. 2 tbsp water

  5. 1 lime juice

  6. 2 tbsp vegetable oil


  1. In a pestle and mortar pound chilli padis until fine and add rest of the ingredients for salad dressing. Mix well.

  2. In a pot of boiling water, add 2 tsp of salt, blanch prawns for 1-2 minutes until cooked. Drain and set aside.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, add pomelo, carrot, cucumber and shallots. Mix evenly.

  4. Transfer salad to a wide plate. Add pok chui biscuits, blanched prawns, peanuts and drizzle with salad dressing. 

  5. Garnish with coriander and serve.
