Orange Chicken – 橙子鸡

A twist to the regular sweet and sour chicken recipe is this delicious deep fried chicken bite-size pops in orange sauce. This orange chicken recipe takes inspiration from the signature dish of Panda Express.

As we’re spending more time at home, this is the perfect recipe to recreate this iconic take-out favourite! A must-try with its sweet-savoury goodness kept us wishing we made more.

  1. 4 large Boneless chicken thigh (cut into bite sizes)

  2. ½ cup Orange juice

  3. 2 tbsp Cooking cream

  4. 1 Egg white

  5. 1 tbsp Grated ginger

  6. 1 tbsp Grated garlic

  7. 1 tbsp Onion powder

  8. 2 tbsp Soy sauce

  9. 2 tbsp Garlic oil

  10. 2 tbsp Fried minced garlic

  11. ½ Orange skin slices

  12. 1 tbsp Toasted white sesame seeds

Batter for chicken:

  1. 240g Plain flour

  2. 60g Corn starch

  3. 1 tsp Baking soda

  4. ½ tsp Salt

  5. 2 Eggs

  6. 200ml Water

Orange sauce:

  1. ½ cup Orange juice

  2. 1½ tbsp White vinegar

  3. 3 tbsp Ketchup

  4. 1 tbsp Light Soy sauce

  5.  ½ tbsp Chilli flakes (optional if you don’t like spice)

  6. ½ cup Rice syrup

  7. 2 tbsp Oil


  1. In a pan, add 2 tbsp of cooking oil, stir fry minced garlic until fragrant, lightly browned and crispy.

  2. Marinate chicken pieces with orange juice, cooking cream, egg white, grated ginger & garlic, onion powder, soy sauce and garlic oil. Leave it to marinate in the chiller for at least 1 to 2 hours.

  3. In a mixing bowl, sift plain flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt and mix well. Divide into 2 mixing bowls.

  4. Add 2 beaten eggs and water into one of the bowls and set aside.

  5. Once chicken is marinated, coat chicken pieces into wet batter, drip out excess batter and coat with dry batter.

  6. Deep fry chicken in batches until golden brown, drain and set aside.

  7. In a pan, combine all ingredients under Orange sauce. Mix well and bring to a simmer until it thickens.

  8. Add in fried chicken pieces and toss to coat evenly.

  9. Add in orange skin slices, fried garlic and white sesame seeds. Garnish with coriander.
