6 Shiok Soups For The Cold(er) Weather

Shiok Soup Recipes

The weather is unpredictable these days. With the exception of some sibei hot days, the monsoon season has also brought about many chilly ones — days that call for some warm and comforting food.

Just like how snuggling under blankets sounds like the perfect solution to a cold day, a bowl of warm soup might just be the ‘blanket’ for our tummies. If you find it difficult to whip up a mean bowl of soup on your own, come join us with 6 soup recipes that will have you feeling shiok all over.

1. Hot & Sour Tofu Soup

A hot (pun intended) household favourite, the Hot & Sour Tofu Soup is the perfect companion for your family dinners/reunions — even better if you love a good kick of spice in your system!

To get the mushrooms, bamboo shoots and tofu to be the perfect size for slurping, be warned that there is some shredding to do! That said, after all that hard work, this deeply flavourful and wickedly savoury dish is bound to satisfy any type of palate. Don’t forget to add some cornstarch in your soup for that gao (thick) texture — it brings the dining experience up a notch!

2. Watercress and Pork Ribs Soup

If you’re looking for a healthy soup that’s packed with antioxidants, this is the one for you. Not only is the peppery taste super shiok to eat while it rains, but it also has cooling properties so you don’t get too heaty.

Our method of boiling the soup extracts earthy flavours of the watercress without the ‘bitterness’ from overcooking them, by adding the stems at the beginning and the tender shoots and leaves at the end. The red dates and wolfberries balances the soup with sweetness, and don’t forget dried scallops to add an extra depth of flavour.

3. Braised Mock Shark Fin Soup

Shark fin soups are a highly controversial dish, even argued as gourmet cruelty by many. Fret not, because we are going to show you exactly how we can recreate the same taste, without involving any of our (not so) little friends.

Elevate your meal with this delicious concoction, versatile for all occasions — be it a simple family dinner, or when you have guests over. Once again, the soup texture is important here; remember, slow and steady wins the game.

4. ABC Soup

Tell me you’re asian without telling me you’re asian. If you belong to an asian household, you’ve probably had ABC Soup, a staple in many families.

An actual nutrition powerhouse, this is a classic dish that does not substitute taste for health. This healthy one-pot broth brings out the natural sweetness of carrots, potatoes and tomatoes for a comforting and soothing taste. Recreate this with us whenever you miss home!

Everyone can use a good chicken soup on a cold day, but why not switch it up a bit? Enjoy Meatmen’s own rendition of this classic soup dish here!

Did you know? Black garlics are also known as ‘black gold’, a highly prestigious and nutritious ingredient in the culinary scene. Pair that up with a wide array of herbs, and you get the perfect mix of nutrition and deliciousness. Enough from us, try this for yourself!

Fancy a quick trip to Thailand? Our recipe brings you there in just 20 minutes. Creamy, rich and refreshing, fans of coconut will especially love this dish. Go creative with your ingredients for this one — we used steamboat assortments, but the sky is the limit! Remember to add some kaffir limes to balance out the creaminess, and you’re set for a brilliant bowl of goodness.
