6 Easy Prawn Dishes To Make At Home, Including Salted Egg Prawns in 30 Mins

Prawn Recipes 2021

The past few weeks have been a crazy rollercoaster of uncertainty in Singapore. Between looming cases and the possibility of CB 2.0, it has been a great reminder to cherish our loved ones and appreciate what we have everyday!

That said, with so many things shaking up, it’s nice to know that food is always a safe haven to return to. Prawn dishes, for one, have such great variety to satisfy different taste buds all year round. Whether you’re up for trying a new recipe, or just want to recreate your favourite comfort dish, here are 6 a-peel-ing prawn recipes that are easy to make and a treat to eat.

1. Fried Shrimp Puffs

Feeling restless after a long WFH day? Or have kids running around and looking for mischief? Put all that excess energy into making these fried shrimp puffs. Peeling, mincing and throwing the prawn mixture will not only get it to combine perfectly, but also make for a fun family activity.

The puffs stay crispy for a long time — you can prepare them for meals beforehand, or snack on them throughout the day without worrying about them getting soggy.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes. Serves 12-16 pieces.

2. Lemongrass Butter Prawns

You’ve probably heard of lemongrass chicken, but this recipe brings the fresh, tangy flavour of lemongrass to a whole new level. Even better, it balances out the zi-char style crispy caramelised butter crumbs coating the prawns! We promise it’s easier to make than you think.

Let the curry leaves, chilli padis, pandan and lemongrass in this recipe transport you back to 2018 when we could fly to Thailand for Thai-style zi-char.

3. Lychee Salad Prawns

What are the 2 main features of Chinese wedding banquets? The prawn salad appetizer and the beer. Don’t worry, we’re just kidding (maybe).

Our lychee salad prawns innovatively uses lychee beer as a marinade to enhance the prawns natural sweetness. While the lychee mayonnaise is a delightfully fruity accompaniment to the crispy, deep fried prawns.

4. Sambal Petai Prawns

For those with a more traditional palate, this sambal petai dish is going to comfort your Asian soul. The recipe was given to us by an old Malay makcik (aunty), who had first learnt it from her mother. It even includes a 9-ingredient homemade sambal paste. Try it out! And see if your cooking would garner a “good job, sayang”. Nothing sweeter than that!

5. Sweet and Sour Prawn Curry

Just because you’re working from home, doesn’t make you any less busy. For those days where you’re pressed for time, single-wok meals are your best friend. Check out this refreshing assam curry that only takes half an hour to prepare and has a family-friendly spice level!

Serve it up with a simple bowl of rice and some home-made achar and you’re good to go.

6. Salted Egg Yolk Prawns

And finally, the prawn dish of a generation — salted egg yolk prawns. The original dish that kicked off the trend for salted egg yolk dishes!

This recipe may be a little more challenging for new home cooks, but the results are #worthit. It is truly a rock star dish. We recommend getting larger prawns for this dish to experience the full shiok factor.
